French Designer Philippe Starck, well known for his housewares you buy in Target stores, assumes himself accurate while declaring that he wants to give up design in an interview with a German publication.
As reported on Breitbart:
Renowned French designer Philippe Starck says he is fed up with his job and plans to retire in two years, in an interview published in a German weekly on Thursday.
“I was a producer of materiality and I am ashamed of this fact,” Starck told Die Zeit weekly newspaper.
“Everything I designed was unnecessary.
“I will definitely give up in two years’ time. I want to do something else, but I don’t know what yet. I want to find a new way of expressing myself …design is a dreadful form of expression.”
I don’t know about you, but I bet lots of designers would beg to differ. Personally, I have my bets on the possibility that Philippe had a bad day, and began whoring for the attention of the press, or developed an ego so large that he felt like he needed make a big splash. Perhaps trying to take over the world has left him in a funk.
Still, we all know that there is some truth to anything said, in some sort of way. I’m sure Starck in all his wisdom took a look at the tissue dispenser he just designed and wondered if that was really why he was here on the earth. Yes, extreme materialism and so on… did he just discovered this?
Perhaps he should simply take a camping trip, get away from his mansion, and take a breather.
Sure, some projects borders on pointless: but design is a good honest way to make a living, and I for one enjoy the creativity and expression I get to be involved with every day.
Creating order out of disorder is the hallmark of mind; the mark of the divine. Appreciating beauty in form and function is integral to the work a designer does, no matter what medium.
In my opinion Starck has (perhaps knowingly) lambasted the art industry as well -or is abstract impressionism is a more worthwhile pursuit than graphic design, or ID? Sure, art in it’s purest form has less of a “materialistic” factor.. but still somehow manages to cost money.
I for one wonder what the AIGA’s statement will be concerning this matter.
