I was reading the article “Facebook Fatigue” over at the Register, and I have to admit- I have it. I just cannot keep up with all of the social networking going on – not that you shouldn’t. You see, I’m pretty sure that my personality is at fault – I really am not a social butterfly. The chaps over at the Register have accurately have diagnosed me…
… once the novelty of MySpace wears off, most people only stop by to check out bands or watch videos.
After I found out which of my friends were on these social networks, and discovered a few people who I knew long ago, I ran out of reasons to visit. Holler at me if I’m being sacreligious here.
Speaking of which, that’s why you will never see Twittering. I personally cannot think of a greater waste of time.

I agree that Twitter, Facebook, etc. can be a waste of time, but that doesn’t mean that they are a waste of time.
For me, the key has been to be smart about how I spend my time there and utilize the mediums. Fatigue is inevitable if you try to friend everyone, update constantly, and login hourly. Relatively speaking, I’ve been able to keep distraction down by utilizing RSS, keeping my Twitter follows low (I rarely follow people I haven’t met face-to-face), and waiting until specific times to login/catchup.
The rewards are definitely there though, if you maintain your network. I’ve gotten a lot of great ideas, advice and referrals from people through online networking. And it also results in real dollars when I use the network to promote things I’m doing and build up my brand/image among people I know.
There’s no way I can have coffee or lunch regularly with the 100+ LinkedIn connections I have, but something like Twitter is an easy, passive way of keeping up to date about what’s going on and sharing experiences and expertise. That’s crucial when business is word-of-mouth, and someone thinks of you as the go-to person for XYZ because you’re top-of-mind.

I have the Facebook fatigue too. I´m tired of those applications that spam all the time, no matter if you have them installed or not.

I gotta say, I became tired of social networks the minute I had to be a part of two of them… and I’m not an “hourly” participant.
For me the most engaging thing to hit the net has been bulletin-board style forums.
